Light up Your Shots – LED Camera Lights

When it comes to get good quality video, lighting can make or break a scene. With LED technology become more popular and affordable, there is no reason you should not have one. Thankfully TOLIFO has set us up with a few of their lights, and some promo codes to help you improve your next video shoot. For less than $50, these lights certainly offer some great bang for the buck.

When it comes down to it, these lights are the same model, but each package has it’s own perks. Before we get into what makes each light different, let’s take a look at what makes them the same. Both lights run on the same LED panel. While the packaging with marked with the TOLIFO name, they appear to be in generic packaging that can be re-branded with any company’s name. Each light light is powered by a generic battery pack (Sony NP-F550 Battery). What’s great about this is the fact that it makes it easy to buy replacements or backup battery packs for those long days off shooting. A quick search on eBay, showed you can pick these up for as little as $6 for two of them.

Each light features 144 LED lights which can be customized to give you the color temperature and brightness you are looking for. Both brightness and color temperature can be adjusted by the easy to access controls on the back of the light. While I wish there was a remote to make these adjustments, the built in controls are easy to reach and use. At the back of each unit is 4 buttons: Power, Function, Up, and Down. The power button does what it should, the function button switches between the color temperature and the brightness of the light, while the up and down buttons will adjust those settings.

When it comes to adjusting the color (without getting too technical), you get a nice range between the cooler (blue) tones and the warmer (yellow/organge) colors. The same goes for brightness.  This allow you to get the correct color temp if need it, or match with other lights.

When it comes to the differences, these lights come in two different sets, for basically the same price.

At the end of the day, I prefer the flat panel model. The addition of the carrying case, tabletop stand, and the power supply, just makes it a better purchase in my eyes. If you really need barn doors, you could always make shift your own with some pieces of cardboard and tape.

The first model, is more in line with a professional set up and include barn doors. These metal flaps allow users to concentrate in a certain direction if needed to light a specific subject. While barn doors can be great in some cases, they are not always needed. Included with the light is a battery pack, and charger (which is powered by a USB plug (not included).

The Basic, flat light panel comes with a wide range of accessories. In addition to the same items included with the barn door model, you also receive a table top stop to mount the light on a flat surface, a power plug, to power the light directly, and lastly a padded case to carry everything in.
