Go! Pro-Shakes – Protein Shakes for Kids

It’s important to make sure kids are eating healthy. Whether they are on the run, or just want a quick snack to quench their sweet tooth, there aren’t many options on healthy snack they will like. Go! Pro-Shakes tries to fill that void, by creating a healthy protein shake that kids and adults alike will like. We were sent a package of chocolate shake mix to try out.

IMG_0919You can mix the Go! Pro-Shake powder with water, milk, or non dairy milks, for a quick snack or breakfast on the go. I tried with both cold water and (unsweetened) almond milk. I think I enjoyed the taste with it in water more than I did with the almond milk. I think the flavors of the almond milk just clashed with the chocolate flavoring of the pro-shake powder. Had I mixed it with chocolate almond milk, I am sure the outcome would have come out a lot better.

When made with water, the flavor is pretty decent. I was hoping it would be like a yoo-hoo. It was close, but nothing will ever compare. But then again, this is packed with Protein, carbs, and Omega 3s and vitamins, which makes it a great snack for kids. You are giving them things their body needs, but you are disguising it at a shake. Of course, one way to entice kids to like something is by the sweetness. And while Go! Pro-Shakes likes to fault that there are no added sugars, no aspartame, and no high fructose corn syrup; there is sucralose. This brings me to my next point.

There have been numerous studies on the effects sucralose can have on your body. If parents were to read those studies, they may change their mind on what they give their kids. The misses doesn’t like using sucralose at all, and tries to avoid artificial sweeteners as much as possible. Side effects aside, sucralose can sometimes produce a noticeable aftertaste, which upon drinking the Go! Pro-Shakes was noticeable. Out of curiosity, I looked up the ingredients of another popular breakfast shake for kids (I know I had then growing up), Carnation Breakfast Essentials. According to their nutrition facts and ingredients, it looks like they use real sugar and stay away from artificial sweeteners.

If you want to try Go! Pro-Shakes, you can certainly give them a shot. But at $30 for a 15 serving bag, the Carnation Breakfast Essentials may be a better bet. You can order your shake mix directly from their website.
